Set up Moofed in 4 steps:
# 1. Clone the repo
git clone https://github.com/lucasnijssen/moofed.git
# 2. Open the folder
cd moofed
# 3. Install dependencies
npm install
# 4. Run Moofed
npm start
You'll be asked to log in using your VanMoof account. Moofed will
automatically back up and save your bike data in the directory
moofed_backup.

What is Moofed?
Moofed is a backup tool for your VanMoof bike data. It helps you store your bike's important information securely.
Who has developed this app and why?
Moofed is being developed by Lucas Nijssen, a VanMoof rider who wanted to ensure that riders could maintain access to their bike's features even if VanMoof's services become unavailable. The goal is to give riders more control over their own data and bike functionality.
Is this similar to Bikey?
It shares the same goal—giving riders more control over their bikes—but the approach is very different. Moofed securely backs up all your VanMoof data into a file, so you're not dependent on servers or apps. Bikey, on the other hand, is more of a fallback app that mimics VanMoof's own app functionality and currently only supports the S3/X3 models.
Which bikes are supported?
We tested Moofed with the VanMoof S5, A5, S3 and X3. It might work with other bikes, but we don't guarantee it.
Will it void my warranty?
No, using Moofed will not void your warranty. Moofed only reads and backs up your bike's data—it doesn't modify any settings or firmware. It's similar to making a backup of your phone's data, which doesn't affect your warranty either.
Is my data safe?
Yes, Moofed uses secure methods for login and data storage. Your credentials are never saved on our servers.
How long are the SA5 certificates valid?
Normally, SA5 certificates are only valid for 7 days. However, during VanMoof's previous bankruptcy, they extended the validity period to 10 years. It's recommended to regularly back up your certificates to ensure continued access to your bike's features.
Why do I need to log in using my VanMoof account?
Moofed needs to access your VanMoof account to download your bike data. Your credentials are never saved on our side.
How do I contribute to Moofed?
Moofed is open source and free to use. You can contribute to Moofed by going to the GitHub repository.
